Dysthymic Depression
This can be classified as "moderate" depression.  The symptoms are generally longer term, but are not as severe as major depression.  It's also not uncommon for people in this category to feel symptoms of major depression at various times.

Bipolar Disorder
Also known as a "manic depressive" illness, generally the individual experiences extreme mood swings that affect their family life, work, school etc.  This type of depression is also characterized by restlessness and irritability.

Atypical Depression
This type occurs more often with women.  It's characterized by periods of depression that get better and worse over a period of time.  Some symptoms include overeating, excessive sleeping and sensitivity to rejection and criticism.
