Treatment of depression

Treatment of depression depends on the individual as well as the severity and duration of the illness:

  • Psychotherapy. Otherwise known as “talk therapy,” is said to be the most effective way of treatment. Countless studies have proven that when a person is talking to someone about their condition it can slowly rid depression. However results will take time it’s a rather safe form of treatment and expression how a person feels.
  • Exercise. Regular exercise provides natural, mood lifting chemical changes in your body. You don’t have to train for a marathon; even a short walk every day will help. Simple exercises like walking, swimming or dancing helps improve your overall health, strength and balance.
  • Nutrition. Eating normal balanced diet is important for your physical and mental health.
  • Sleep. Poor sleep has a major impact on mood. Do get the right amount of sleep daily.
  • Social Support. Strong social networks reduce isolation, a key risk factor for depression. Keep in regular contact with friends and family, or consider joining a class or group. Volunteering is a wonderful way to get social support and help others while also helping yourself.
  • Stress Reduction. Making changes in your life to help control and reduce stress. Too much stress exacerbates depression and puts you at risk for depression in the future.
  • Prozac is an effective antidepressant. It is one of the trade names of drug Fluoxetine. Prozac is also used for the treatment of many other psychological and mental disorders. It helps restore the serotonin balance in the brain (serotonin is the mood-influencing neurotransmitter in the central nervous system) and thus help the patient feel better. Prozac inhibits the unusual release of serotonin triggering mood upswings and other behavior related problems.
